Starting on a new diet is exciting. But, before you head out to your favorite supermarket looking for the right products, it would be wise that you prepare a list so that you won’t be confused with the different food varieties. If you’re new in Mediterranean diet, you may need a long Mediterranean diet shopping list with you the first time you shop. This diet covers a wide variety of foods, from fruits to wine. Most of the foods included in the diet are not difficult to find, so you’ll have no problem. What You Should and What You Should Not Include in Your Shopping List

Okay, let’s start with the basic: fruits and vegetables (anything plant-based), from oranges and grapes to eggplants. These are foods that you will find in almost all diet shopping lists. And instead of buying fastfood products like burgers and fries, you’d be better off shopping for grain foods rich in carbohydrates (whole grains are preferred) like bread, rice, pasta, and cereals, as well as beans and nuts. You must also include dairy products in your list (think of cheese and yogurt). All these are to be consumed daily, so they will usually constitute a great part of the food you buy.

Another very important product that must be in your Mediterranean diet shopping list is olive oil. This is one of the distinctive characteristics of Mediterranean diet, replacing any other type of oil like vegetable and animal oil. This oil is highly preferred not only because it provides monounsaturated fats but also because it is rich in vitamins and iron. And while it’s not as common as the typical oil you will find anywhere, this is the best type of oil so far.

Aside from these, you must also include eggs and poultry products in your list, together with sea foods like fish (though not as much since these are recommended only to be taken several times per week). If you’re into meat, you wouldn’t be deprived because this diet also includes meat, although it has to be consumed in little servings.

And if you love wine, then you’ll definitely enjoy Mediterranean diet! Wine is a common staple in this diet, recommended to be consumed moderately with every meal. Although all the foods included in your list are healthy, there was a research that showed that wine is the major factor that reduces mortality among those who are into this diet. So, it’s definitely a must!

Before completing out your list, there are still a few things you must add. Cancel out salt and replace it with natural spices and herbs—they’re healthier. And if you want to add other foods, go for raw or unprocessed ones, or for those that are only processed lightly. They contain less chemicals and fats compared to processed food.

With your Mediterranean diet shopping list complete, you can now proceed to your favorite health store or supermarket. And if the place is not that far from your area, you may also consider walking. Physical activities play a great part in Mediterranean diet.
